Red clover is an excellent choice for food plots. Its high protein content and rapid recovery after grazing make it highly attractive to deer. The ability to establish quickly and thrive in a variety of soil conditions ensures a reliable and productive food plot.
Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a warm-season annual forb that can provide several benefits to your whitetail food plot program. However, it is not a legume, as are some of the more commonly planted summer deer forages, such as soybeans, cowpeas, lablab, and alyceclover.
A stand of white clover is also a great early-season bow spot, but it doesn’t just attract whitetails in the fall. Hen turkeys eat it in the spring, and they’ll nest around a clover plot, too. Rabbits devour it, quail chase bugs in it, and even bears will eat it.
